CAPD: Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Circles

The Graduate Student of Color mentoring circles is an initiative created by Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD) and the Office of Graduate Education (OGE). The Mentoring Circles connect current graduate students with alumni who provide culturally relevant perspectives on pathways to academic and industry careers.  The program was developed in response to the Black Graduate Student Association’s advocacy for tailored resources to help underrepresented graduate students compete successfully in academic and professional job markets.

Through this month-long program, students will virtually connect with graduate alumni and engage in weekly topical conversations focused on navigating work environments as people of color. In this mentoring circle format, students will have access and receive input from mentors in various career paths and hear about their peers’ experiences. The mentoring circles will take place in the evenings and meet online for three one-hour group sessions. After the group sessions, in the fourth week, students will have the opportunity to have 15 minute individual conversations with mentors. Program dates are April 5, 2022 through April 28, 2022, and the time commitment is 6 hours across 5 events.

If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, or another minoritized sexual or gender identity, and you are a current or former member of the Active Duty Military, the National Guard, or Reserves, you are invited to participate in a research study about the college experiences of LGBTQ student veterans. We hope the results of this study will help inform higher education leaders about the ways institutions can support LGBTQ+ student veterans.

In order to participate, you should:
  • Be a currently enrolled student at an institution of higher education, or enrolled within the past 12 months.
  • Be a current or former member of the Active Duty Military, the National Guard, or Reserves regardless of deployment status, combat experience or legal status as a veteran.
  • Self-identify with a minoritized sexual orientation (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, pansexual) or gender (e.g., transgender, gender, gender queer) at the time of the study.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 70 years old.

If you meet the above participation criteria, please complete the Research Participant Interest Form. If you are selected for interviewing with the study, we will contact you to set up a convenient time for your initial interview, which will last 60-90 minutes. You will have the opportunity to participate in a second interview if you choose. Students who participate in this study will receive a $50.00 gift card to amazon.com for each completed interview. If you prefer to provide anonymous information, you may also submit written responses to interview prompts within the Research Participant Interest Form. Compensation will not be provided for anonymous responses, to retain anonymity.

If you have any questions, contact the study primary investigators Dr. Amanda Mollet by email (amollet@ku.edu) or phone (785-864-1467) or Josh Kinchen by email (jkinchen@gmu.edu) or phone (910-409-2294). This research has been approved by the University of Kansas Institutional Research Board #00147791 and George Mason University Institutional Research Board #1720569.

Thanks for considering being a part of this study!
