In this workshop happened in Stata Center (32) 124, we draw storyboards based on existing stories. We provided two stories to choose from.
Story1 (by Ruihan)
A woman was walking towards the Harvard Bridge. It was a hot Friday afternoon in the summer.
She looks normal, checking out the structure the bridge. (She was actually planning about the quickest landing point if she jumps off the bridge.)
She was holding an umbrella for sunlight protection purpose as many Asian women do.
When she reached the middle of the bridge, she paused.
She closed the umbrella and took off her jacket. She was wearing a swimming dress.
She took off her shoes, and carefully packed these by the side of the road.
She was standing by the bridge, facing the east side of Charles River.
She looked at those buildings of MIT and passerby, hoping someone may notice her abnormal behavior.
But even the passer-by on the bridge did not pay attention to her. They just walked by, without even looking at her.
She felt she was ready to jump once these people have passed.
Then she spotted the spider nets hanging over the bridge railings and took on a disgusted look.
She didn’t want to make her clothes dirty because of spider net, or spiders.
So she stepped back, and sat by the side of the road.
Oh the sunlight was so bright. So she covered herself body with the jacket.
Suddenly her friend called her. She told her friend that she was now on the bridge.
She started crying and explaining everything that made her so desperate.
Suddenly, one policeman showed up in front of her. And then there came another policeman.
She looked around and saw two police cars, and then there came a third one behind her.
She told her friend that the police was going to talk to her and hang up the call.
The policeman: Hey, are you xxx?
The woman: yes.
The policeman then said to his microphone “Yes, we found her”.
The woman then realized her friend indeed reported to the police.
But she could not control her passive view of the world, and kept saying “I was just feeling so sad.”
The woman: I didn’t want to kill myself. I am even wearing a swimming dress. I was just hoping to see if I have a stronger desire for life the moment I entered the water.
The other policeman: Why didn’t you go to the z center for a swim?
The woman thought to herself: Oh. Why didn’t I thought that way? He is so smart!
The other policeman: Calm down. Now, take a deep breath.
The girl was still choking, tears kept running down her face.
The policeman: do you need a cooler place? Why not have a little rest inside the car?
The woman: Sure. She then followed the police to the car.
But when she entered the car, they quickly shut the door and kept her in the special back seat with a barrier between two seat.
The woman suddenly stopped crying and realized the severity of the situation.
Then here came the ambulance. They took her to the ambulance, and explained to her it was illegal to leave now.
Her ex-boyfriend called her. She was hoping to answer. But the police told her it is really important that they talk now, and did not allow her to answer the phone call.
Though she was speaking to the police, she swiped right to connect to the call, to let him listen for 30s her conversation with the police, the sharp tone of the ambulance. Oh, only then she realized it was the first time she was inside the ambulance to hear that sound. It was not loud inside the car.
She took a glimpse outside and saw the ambulance was passing by 77 Mass Ave, then her lab building.
She had a mixed feeling of pride and terror because isn’t iconic to pass MIT in an ambulance?
But she didn’t know what life might bring in the next few hours. She felt the fear of being forced to take antidepressant even succumb the anxiety resulted from all her recent trauma and prolonged life stress.
