About Us
The Borderline began as a project to cover the 200 foot long wall in the tunnels under the campus of MIT. The tunnel is a commonly used route between MIT Buildings 66 and E17 during bad weather; it is a useful connection to get from point A to point B, but Borderline aimed to make it a destination through art and technology. In the spring of 2017, over 25 MIT-affiliated artists started painting murals in the tunnels. Since then, Borderline has expanded to over 65 murals in the tunnels and Banana Lounge (26-110) on campus. More murals and animations are being added every semester. Beyond the tunnels, Borderline has collaborated on projects with numerous organizations, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Porto Seguro Cultural Center in São Paulo, Brazil. Borderline has been featured in The Boston Globe, VICE Motherboard, and other publications. The magic of Borderline comes in the form of augmented reality via the Artivive app, available for Android and iOS.
